Matt Hinds-Aldrich

Assistant Professor of Fire Science, Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA

Matt Hinds-Aldrich recently joined the Fire Science faculty at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts. He is currently finishing a PhD at the University of Kent in England. His doctoral research re-examines the concept of firefighter culture in the United States and United Kingdom. He served as a volunteer firefighter and trained as a fire investigator prior to undertaking doctoral training.

For the past five years he has been studying the topic of firefighter arson and has developed one of the worlds’ largest international archival databases of firefighters arrested for setting fires dating back to the early 1800s. He recently served on a national firefighter arson working group convened by the National Volunteer Fire Council and wrote the NVFC Firefighter Arson White Paper. His research and teaching interests link fire and safety studies, criminology, and sociology. His previous academic writing has explored the persistent use of arson during protests and the politicization of arson during the American ‘church arson epidemic’ and the German Reichstag fire.
